Chandler Water Hardness: What 5–20 Grains per Gallon Means

Use the city figures as context

The City of Chandler water-quality FAQ publishes a hardness range from 5 to 20 grains per gallon and an average of 16.5. That spread is the reason a citywide figure should not become a universal controller setting. Confirm the water supplier shown on the bill and measure the water entering the equipment. The FAQ is a utility reference, not a test certificate for a particular house.

Choose the right sample point

Ask which tap represents untreated supply and which indoor outlet receives softened water. An outside hose connection may intentionally bypass treatment. A difference between hose and kitchen results may therefore reflect the plumbing rather than a faulty softener. Record where the sample was collected, the test method and the units.

Keep hardness and TDS separate

Hardness and total dissolved solids describe different properties. A TDS meter cannot directly set the calcium-and-magnesium hardness value in a softener controller. If someone recommends equipment from a handheld number, ask what was measured and how it supports that decision. A basic hardness test also does not establish that every possible contaminant is absent.

Size around capacity and flow

Working capacity at a chosen salt dose, daily hardness load and peak simultaneous flow all matter. Ask the provider to explain the proposed settings and reserve. A large advertised grain number does not tell you how the system performs at the selected operating settings. Keep irrigation and other intended untreated branches in the discussion.

Use a measured next step

Review water hardness testing, installation or programming. Call (323) 916-2854 with the address and equipment information. The City of Chandler water-quality FAQ is linked in the footer.
